Caregiver’s Corner

Although I was the one being cared for, I saw firsthand how challenging it was for my caregiver too. So, I've gathered insights from my treatment experience to highlight the often-overlooked struggles caregivers face. I'll cover common conflicts that arise, managing treatment schedules, and ensuring you look after your own health.

Managing Conflict

When a person is diagnosed with cancer, conflicts, while unintended, may arise. They can be multifaceted and emotionally charged, involving the patient, the caregiver, and the extended family. These conflicts often stem from differences in perspectives, emotional responses, and expectations. Here are some of the common conflicts, which I hope will help you anticipate and navigate them:

Managing Your Own Health

Your physical and mental well-being are just as important as the patient's. Although it might be challenging to keep up with your own needs while caring for someone else, it's going to be a lot harder if you’re also unwell. So, I advise you to pay attention to these simple things:

Physical Health

Eat your food regularly! Even if it's just small, frequent snacks, don't skip meals.

Drink regularly! If you find yourself not drinking enough or forgetting to drink, you can set a reminder on your phone - I’ve put a Google Calendar tutorial here in case you missed it.

Exercise. If possible, try to incorporate some form of physical activity into your routine. For example, taking the stairs instead of elevator during your visit to the hospital.

Mental Health

Look for support system: Find a friend, family member, or support group where you can express your feelings and experiences

Take time for yourself: Try to schedule regular "me time" to engage in activities that you enjoy and that help you relax, even if it’s just 15mins. Some people also find comfort by praying.

Seek professional help if needed: consider talking to a mental health professional if you need.
